Alkenones for Phase Change

Inventors: Christopher Reddy, Greg O’Neil
IP Status: Pending

Overview: Phase change materials (PCMs) are substances that undergo physical state change, allowing them to absorb and release large amounts of latent heat as they transition between solid and liquid forms, providing useful heating and cooling energy. PCMs represent a revolutionary technology for many applications, including building materials, photovoltaic solar energy, and clothing.

Technology: Long-chain poly-saturated alkenones represent a well-suited chemical composition as PCMs. Un- modified alkenones have melting range and latent heat enthalpy values similar to paraffin waxes and represent a sustainable, greener, and more stable option for PCMs. Additional chemical modification development would further enhance the properties of alkenones as PCMs
