Large Dynamic Range BLDC Electric Motor Design

Inventor: Andrew Billings

Overview: Oceanographic exploration relies heavily on large dynamic-range electric motors. Traditionally, a large dynamic range is produced with high voltage and a transmission. Increasingly, these motors in exploration vehicles run on batteries as a power source. Therefore, these motors must operate with maximum power, space, and weight efficiency.

Technology: This technology is a novel Brushless DC (BLDC) motor system. The design is intended to decouple the torque from the voltage in BLDC motors, allowing torque and speed to be independent. The outcome is a consistent application of torque to the shaft while reducing parts and friction and providing greater system control.
